GLS is one of Europe's leading parcel and express service providers.
After being founded in late 1999, GLS succeeded in establishing a stable European parcel network in just a few years. Today it covers 41 European countries and eight U.S. states. Acquisitions and partnerships have since then been milestones in the history of the company. In many countries GLS has founded its own companies – often complete networks, which have immediately gone into full operation.
GLS always has the most up to date information regarding your parcel. Use your 14-digit parcel number (without spaces) to see where your parcel is at the moment.
With GLS, senders and recipients can track their parcels at any time. After entering the parcel number (also shipment number) or Track ID, detailed information appears on-screen about the parcel and the delivery process itself. This includes the estimated delivery day and the most recently carried-out action. Parcel tracking is free of charge. Anyone sending or expecting several parcels can track them all simultaneously using the online tracking function. How it works: Each parcel label includes a 2D barcode. It contains all the necessary parcel data, including the parcel number. The code is scanned at all the main transport points and the current position and the most recently performed action is transmitted to the GLS system.
This is important for the entire logistics coordination process. GLS makes the information available via the online parcel tracking function, meaning that you too can track your parcel at any time. When the parcel, for example, is loaded into a delivery vehicle, the drivers scan the code on the label with their hand-held scanners. Even if the recipient is not present at the time of the delivery attempt, the scanner still comes into operation. The driver then scans the notification card, which is left behind for the recipient. In many countries, the driver sends the delivery information via mobile data transmission directly to GLS, thus making them available in real-time. All the data is collated in the GLS system. Consignment tracking is then possible using both the parcel number and the Track ID, from the notification card.
You can also track your shipment in real time using a Track ID, which can be found on every notification card. In many countries, GLS provides delivery information in real-time.
With GLS parcel tracking, you always have an overview of the parcel status of your parcel and the available delivery options.
Track your parcel online at any time: All you have to do is simply enter one or more parcel numbers. You can also track your shipment in real time using a Track ID, which can be found on every notification card. In many countries, GLS provides delivery information in real-time.
If no-one is present at the time of the attempted delivery, the next steps of GLS will depend on what is customary in the country in question. In many countries it is common practice that neighbours accept parcels. GLS drivers then leave a notification card for the recipient. If there are GLS ParcelShops in the country, these can be used as an alternative delivery address.
In some countries it is already possible to preselect a GLS ParcelShop as a delivery address when ordering goods online. You can find out which delivery options are available in a particular country by visiting the website of the GLS national company.
Just around the corner: GLS ParcelShops play an important role in the service provided to recipients.
GLS ParcelShops are convenient acceptance and collection points for parcels – with long opening hours, personal service and short waiting times. They are integrated into different types of shops, for example, video rental shops, newsagents, and copy shops.
There are GLS ParcelShops in 14 European countries already, with the number of shops in these countries increasing continuously. In more countries the introduction of the ParcelShop concept is planned.
In many countries ParcelShops can serve as alternative delivery addresses for recipients. This means, if a recipient is not at present at the time of the first delivery attempt, the delivery driver takes the parcel to a GLS ParcelShop nearby.
GLS ParcelShops also make shopping easier for consumers. Online shoppers can have goods delivered directly to a ParcelShop close to where they live or close to their workplace. They select a ParcelShop when ordering online or right after the dispatch process has started. GLS provides this service, for example, in Belgium, Denmark, and Germany.
Sending a parcel with GLS means that it arrives quickly and safely.

On the websites of the GLS national companies, you can find out which of these options are available.

The sender is responsible for packing goods properly. If a parcel has any external damage, for example, a hole in the box, the recipient can refuse to accept the parcel. GLS will then return the parcel to the depot and inform the sender about the complaint.
If recipients accept a seemingly intact parcel and subsequently discover that the contents are damaged, they should complain to the sender. This is because GLS cannot check and must not check the contents of sent parcels. Postal secrecy also applies to GLS.
With Parcels app, you can easily find out the exact location of your packages or shipments delivered by GLS.
